This study attempts to analyze D. H. Lawrence’s idea about the otherness both in man versus woman and in human versus nonhuman nature. He had an interest in the recovery of human whole-consciousness through balancing both upper consciousness based on spirit, reason and sight, and lower consciousness based on body and senses. Lawrence thought that the balanced and organic relationship between man and woman and between human and animal was a good way for modern men to recover their whole-consciousness. His understanding of the otherness between human and animals was to recognize his own inner otherness whicht is the lower consciousness suppressed by upper consciousness. Sexual love between man and woman is the best way to attain their whole-consciousness through giving and taking their heterogeneity to partners each other. It first needs their self-transcendental death of both old ego and egoistic self denying the otherness. Bat, fish and snake are the symbols of primordial nonhuman otherness in his animal poems. In these poems, ‘nothingness’ of animals turns into ‘somethingness’ as the poems are proceeding. Lawrence has recognized that the animals are different existence from human through the process.
