This paper purposes to survey the recovery of blood consciousness of Christian symbolic creatures, that is man, lion, bull and eagle in “The Evangelistic Beasts” of Birds, Beasts and Flowers. Lawrence points out that modern men influenced by Christian values have privileged the light side of the flux over the dark and the nerve-brain consciousness over the blood consciousness. In consequence, they lost the balance of life and became to live life-in-death. Lawrence believes that animals have the same basic energy, the divine blood-consciousness as human being. In “The Evangelistic Beasts” poems, Lawrence shows the unbalanced nature of four Christian evangelistic creatures, man, lion, bull and eagle and restores their original natures, which means the recovery of blood-consciousness within themselves. Through this process, Lawrence induces his readers to find their unbalanced consciousness and discover their real inner selves which is the source of life, eventually to recover his vitality. Lawrence’s ultimate aim is the restoration of the whole man through the resurrection of blood-consciousness suppressed by nerve-brain consciousness. It is the apocalypse that Lawrence want to declare toward the corrupt and ruinous modern world.
