The present paper aims at exploring EFL learners" various be-related constructions. Be often poses serious problems to EFL, learners as it is related to various grammatical features such as the copula, the progressive and passive auxiliaries, psych verbs, and unaccusatives. In order to examine how these features are acquired and whether they are interrelated in developmental terms, the present study analyzed Korean EFL learners" written samples collected through free writing activities. The analyses of the data revealed that the copula be, the progressive be, and the passive be are developmentally related, conforming to an implicational scale. On the other hand, the learners" be"s in psych-verb and unaccusative constructions were found to bear no significant relations with the be"s in other constructions. Further lexical analyses and interviews suggested that psych-verb and unaccusative constructions are acquired on a word-by-word basis and are influenced by L1 morpho-syntax associated with individual psych-verbs or unaccusatives, as well as the learners" exposure to individual lexical items.
