Assuming that the acquisition of verbs is accomplished by the universal linking rule of verb meaning and argument structure in the lexicon, this study examines how Korean learners acquire the two classes of English intransitive verbs.
The experiment was conducted in three stages of the acquisition process -middle, high school, and university levels- involving two hundred and forty-two subjects who were tested on the target structures through an acceptability judgment test.
The results of the test led to the following conclusions: First, the possibility of the transfer of native language which happened in the initial stage of acquisition disappeared in the higher stage. Second, except the initial stage of acquisition, the unaccusative/unergative distinction happened in the interlanguage grammars, which means learners were regulated by the universal principle of Unaccusative Hypothesis. Third, in the acquisition of unaccusatives, Korean learners' access to UG availability didn't happen because they couldn't acquire the lexical representations of unaccusatives. In alternating unaccusatives, there was a fossilization, that is to say, learners' ability to judge unaccusative forms decreased with the transition of the acquisition process. In non-alternating unaccusatives, although learners showed a little improvement in their ability to judge unaccusative forms, there was still the overgeneralization of passivization.
