This study investigated Korean instructors’ and students’ perceptions of NS and NNS English instructors at a university in Korea. Faced with a potential English-only policy, six Korean English instructors and 25 students gave their perspectives on the NS and NNS dichotomy. Korean instructors were asked two questions: (a) what do you think about a potential English-only policy for the English reading program and (b) what do you think about NS instructors teaching English reading courses. Grounded in the instructors’ responses, four questions were formulated to invite students’ opinions in comparison with instructors’ point of view. Findings were discussed according to four emerging themes: (a) NS instructor myths; (b) English accents; (c) a pluricentric view; and (d) NNS
instructor strengths. Overall, instructor and student narratives revealed that a norm-bound attitude toward English education is still prevalent in Korean society. This monocentric view has brought about uneasiness and uncomfortable feelings among NNS English instructors, despite their being successful English teachers. In order to help Korean English teachers and learners pursue effective education in English, this study proposed the need to recognize the shifted role of English as an international language. Equally important, professional development was also recommended to empower NNS English instructors.
