What does it mean by pastoral counseling? In this in-depth thesis, I will critically understand the plausible identity of pastoral counseling from a perspective of a psychoanalytic investigation on the popular concept of healing.
Generally they would think of healing as something that they should positively achieve throughout the process of pursuit, such as the pursuit of happiness, no matter what their circumstances would go astray. However, I strongly maintain in this theoretical thesis that healing is not a concept that we ought to achieve by means of pursuit but a status in which we realize what we are, why we are begotten, how we can make living, etc. under the contemplative consideration about the economy and the counsel of God. This consideration is critically significant for both the psychological comprehension on the formation of human psyche and the theological understanding of humanity, for it will bring “self-esteem” in which we will accept psychologically ourselves as human beings no matter what we are, and, in addition, theologically we will keep faith in God as God who has created and guided us in spite of what we have done before. Therefore, it is crucial to understand that healing is not a process of medical remedy in order to get well-functioning but a process of constructing self-esteem to keep well-being.
Based on the above understanding on healing, I connect the epistemological understanding of healing and the identity of pastoral counseling. Futuremore, I insist that pastoral counseling is not a job in which a counselor tries to fix any malfunctioning that a counselee has but a ministry in which both the counselor and the counselee psychologically and theologically understand who they are in existence and reality. And they thus refrieve self-esteem in order to understand that God has been staying with them to help and lead in the midst of their existential circumstances.
Therefore, I assert that pastoral counseling is an encounter between a counselor and a counselee in order 1) to find their realities and substances, 2) to understand what self-love, which is neither narcissism nor selfishness, means, 3) to enlighten the reality of the self, 4) to develop and enrich the self, and finally 5) to be hopeful as human existences under the economy of God. In particular, I claim that hope is not a kind of optimism but faith in which we can declare that “God is alive.” Therefore I assert that people can be hopeful, for God is alive, and, thus, they can be courageous, for they have hope that is faith.
