In this thesis, the author suggests that the centennial of pastoral counseling in Korean Presbyterian can be divided into 5 stages. The first stage starts with the introduction of pastoral counseling from the opening of Pyongyang Presbyterian Seminary in 1901 and lasts until the Korean Liberation from Japan in 1945. The second stage covers the chaotic state of pastoral counseling from 1946 to 1960 that was caused by the Korean War, divisions in the Presbyterian denomination, and many competing institutes being established because of theological conflicts. The third stage begins when the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary was approved by the South Korean Ministry of Education in 1961, during which the terminological use and the study of pastoral counseling first began, and lasts until 1981 as a restoration period. The fourth stage tracks the specialized development of pastoral counseling based on rapid church growth in South Korea, starting from 1982, when the Korean Association of Pastoral Counse ing was first founded, until 1999. The fifth and final stage begins after 2000 and continues today, focusing on the proliferation of pastoral counseling while discussing its specialization and future outlooks.
Using these stages as a foundation, the author analyzes the past through the perspectives of four realms: the curriculum of pastoral counseling in theological schools, translation and writing related (pastoral counseling) ministries, associations and movements affiliated with pastoral counseling, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). At the same, through the evaluation of the centennial of pastoral counseling in the Korean peninsula, the author forecasts the future prospects of pastoral ministry and proposes different issues that pastoral counseling must be ready to deal with based on the changes of the individual, family, society, and culture in South Korea.
