John Patton is one of the key North American pastoral theologians in the second half of the 20th century. He retired in 2001 from Columbia Theological Seminary, so it would be good at the present time to reflect on his theory and methodology of pastoral theology. John studied under Seward Hiltner and followed his teacher's way of doing pastoral theology, which was to seek the connection between theology and ministry. Patton worked in both academic and pastoral fields, and he showed a way of reflecting on ministry theologically.
First of all, the method of his pastoral theology is a clinically informed one. He emphasized the clinical field and identified himself not as a theologian, but as a "practitioner" and a specialist in pastoral care.
Second, his method is phenomenological. The method focuses on the lived experience of pastoral care work, in which the group members share their experience and together seek to analyze their experience theologically leading them to develop their own theology. Patton thought this process guaranteed a focus on clinical work.
Third, the core of the method of his pastoral care and counseling; pastoral theology is to meet persons in care. Pastoral counseling and theology seek not to solve the problem, but to be in an emphatically accountable relationship. Pastoral counseling assumes the role of bridging the experiences of the modern human beings and the Christian tradition.
Fourth, his pastoral method is communal-contextual. Along with his life long concern for thinking about pastoral care and counseling theologically, Patton coined the phrase "paradigm shift" to describe a dramatic turn in the practice of pastoral care. He noted that pastoral care is focusing more and more on social and cultural concerns, moving from a "clinical pastoral paradigm" to a "communal-contextual"
Finally, he thought that a 'true' understanding and practice of forgiveness is important to each Christian and Church community. Through his lifelong clinical experiences, he noted that human beings tend to think of themselves as being right, and therefore not to forgive. For him, forgiveness is not achieving something oneself, but discovering the new dimension of the other.
In sum, Patton's pastoral theology has several implications to Korean Christians. His method is considered liberal due to his stress on the way of doing theological reflection "from ministry to theology." If we take such a method seriously in the field of pastoral ministry, then our ministerial work will become more and more sound theologically and become more community orientated.
