Park, Chong-hooa 2008, A Study on Park Je-ga's Poems about China Travel. Wonkwang Journal of Humanities 9(1), 174-198. Park Je-ga had traveled China four times. He learned Bukhaksasang based on public welfare, a wealthy country and a powerful army, utilitarianism, and rationalism through these trips. These trips became turning point to his life and literature.
His early works included thrill of butterflies and curiosity about scenery of China which he had read in books or heard through envoys. After he was astonished by awe and ecstasy of the nature on the trip, he steadily looked into others and himself. He was concerned with history and territories of the Kogurye and the Balhae dynasty and he wrote poems about these things. Also he was interested in both historical facts and issues of the present.
He was concerned with history of China very much. Wherever he visited, he wrote poems about origin or history of the name of each place. He was pleased to visit places which he read only in books. When he visited battlefields of the Ming and the Ching dynasty, he wrote poems about the pain of the war. He insisted, however, that we look squarely reality and accept actualism.
He interchanged books composed of illustrated poems with people of Ching. Although this was done in private, aspects of interchange were transformed into an understanding of information and knowledge about scholarship. Advocated poems, poetry and prose of the Ching dynasty made him eager to have foreign fellows. He was limited by realities in Joseon, so he didn't show his talent and seek real friends. In Ching, however, he could display his talent widely, so he was eager for real friends.
