Lee Jeong hoo(1906~39) was an active scholar in the field of juvenile literature in Korea during colonial days ruled by Japan. His boyhood and adolescence were in these colonial days through 1910’ to 1930’ when juvenile literature was just flourishing in Korea.
Under such social and historical backgrounds, he accomplished a lot of literary works and activities. Since the first issue of ‘Eorini’, a representative Korean magazine for children in those days, he had engaged in its publication. Furthermore he had taken an active part in the movement for modernization in culture as well as literature. He translated Japanese translation of fable stories by Aesop and world classics by Bruder Grim and Hans Christian Andersen. He translated also ‘Cuore’ by Edmondo De Amicis.
He played in oral citation of children’s stories. As above he had been playing an active role widely in every field.
Lee Jeong hoo’s achievements has been yet researched and unnoticedin Korea and hardly appreciated to date.
In this article, I have surveyed his activities with his legacies of several literary works by periodization, especially focused on those in his boyhood and in ‘Maeill shinbo’.
This is a comprehensive research on a scholar of juvenile literature who had always devoted his life sincerely to the children of his own country in the difficulty and confusion during the colonial days under Japanese occupation.
