The "Asian branch" of the Nestorian Church had reached East Syrian Church, Central Asia, India and finally to China, along with the eastward stretch of the Silk Road in the colossal Asian continent. The presence of Christianity in China was first recorded in the documents and monuments of a Nestorian community in the seventh century. The Nestorian mission of Aluoben 阿羅本 to the Tang China and the content of famous inscription on the so-called ''Nestorian Monument" have been known to most mission and church historians. As known through the fine scholarship of Hans-Joachim Klimkeit (Germany), Yoshiro Saeki (Japan), and Soo-il Chung (Korea), the Chinese Nestorian Christianity had been under the influence of various Asian religions and political constraints. During the Tang Dynasty of China, the Nestorian Church's impressive early mission began to deteriorate since the the Hui-chang Persecution 會昌廢佛 in 845. After the Persecution, it is said that Chinese Nestorian Churches started losing their religious and missionary enthusiasm. According to Nicolas Standaert's bibliographical research, the Nestorian relics of the Yuan Dynasty were found in southern China and "there are almost no accounts indicating the presence of Christians there under the Tang."
Many scholars have offered various explanations on why Chinese Nestorians ceased to exist in China. The hypotheses proposed by Samuel Moffett (theological compromise) and Jean-Paul Wiest (the lack of native leadership) have been discussed among mission historians. The author of this proposed paper intends to offer a different view on this issue. The author argues that the ethnic identity of the Chinese Nestorians had been under coercive religious pressure from Confucianism as time went by. The Chinese Nestorian Christians wanted to live in "the Chinese way," by accepting the Chinese "Great Tradition" of Confucianism. The author's study on the Chinese Nestorians' "re-conversion" process to Confucianism under the pressure of Great Tradition will offer a fresh way of looking at the identity and ethnic issues in the "failed" history of Christian mission in China.
