Christianity is getting weaker and dwindled in the Western world, though it is growing in some parts of Asia and Africa. However, Islam is growing fast even in Western countries. According to a report of Pew Research Islam will become a biggest religion in 2070 overpassing Christianity. In this situation this paper will pursue a desirable concept of mission which will help the church grow healthily and dynamically.
For this purpose this paper will investigate the concept of salvation which is a core content of mission. According to the understanding of salvation the way and direction of mission is changed. Then I will study the flow of understanding the concept of mission in the mission history. Through this study I will analyze the dark sides of the holistic mission theology. Then, based on this, I will suggest some criteria which are helpful for making right concept of mission for healthy development of Christianity.
The criteria are as follow. First, in the concept of mission there must be a clarity. When the concept is clear and definite, it is easy to communicate in mission and work of mission would be effective. Secondly, when we think of mission, we need to think of effectiveness. With the restricted human and material resources in our mission, we cannot but think always whether our mission is effective or not. Thirdly, the dimension of ethics should not be mixed in the concept of mission, though the ethics is crucial in mission. Ethics should be a bridge which help mission. Lastly, when we think of the term ‘evangelical－ecumenical mission,’ the desirable relationship between the two is that the evangelical dimension provides the goal of mission, and the ecumenical dimension the way of mission.
This study can still be seen as a Christian centered and church-centered approach. This study may seem to be an overly church-centered approach, especially to those who think that the purpose of Christian mission is to contribute to the world’s shalom and prosperity. But the contribution to shalom and prosperity of the world is possible when the church exists. If the church is empty or sold as a bar or a mosque like in Europe, it will have no impact on the world. When Islam surpasses Christianity and occupies society, it becomes impossible to do anything. At least the church should stand. Christianity should be developed healthily, so that we can build God"s Shalom in the world. The most widely accepted concept of holistic missions now seems to need to be refined and modified in a way that is appropriate in this direction.
