Report Errors
The origin of the ascetic tradition of the Church of the East has been hidden for a long time. The ascetic practice which was found among the Qumran sect, had originated from the dualistic understanding of cosmos and human being. The asceticism of Essenes has been accepted by some disciples of Jesus, who formed the base of the Judaisic Christianity. The east Syrian Church and the Church of the East succeeded faithfully to the tradition of the Judaistic Christianity. The east Syrian church formed a special tradition following the ascetic tradition of the Judaistic Christianity : the baptism was related with the sexual asceticism, i. e. encratism. This resulted from the understanding of baptism of the East Syrian Christians. But since the fifth century this tradition began to be forgotten: The tradition of 'sons and daughters of the covenant' disappeared, and the celibacy of the clergy was given up, for men forgot the meaning of the tradition. The situation in the Eastern Syria was different from that in Persia. The Nestorian church in Persia must compete with the state religion and could keep its own tradition no longer. However, the tradition of the Church of the East did not disappear wholly, but it kept alive in the Nestorian monasteries, and the Nestorian missionaries left its traces even in Tang of China.
