Eastern Christian research in Korea, where Western Christianity is the mainstream, is an unexplored field. In the chinese Christian history, Gyeongkyo as an Eastern Christianity, what was introduced to China during the Tang Dynasty, become an important area of Chinese Christian research. The study of the possibility that Eastern Christianity was introduced to Korea has also become an area of Korean Christian history research. Especially, missionaries working in the Eastern Christianity regions, such as Central Asia and China, lately make an introduction of materials in a bid of their regional studies from missiological point of view to Korean religious circles.
This study was originally designed to reveal the history of Christianity, shifted toward the east, that was hidden by the Western Christian history, headed the west. However, on the way of observing the results of Eastern Christian research in Korea, I found that there were not enough the analysis of its own about previous studies. Therefore, this study was redesigned as a study of trends on Eastern Christian research in Korea by means of a preliminary stage of Eastern Christian research. Though the results of analyzing the preceding researches in each fields, first, a historicity that Eastern Christianity was introduced in Korea was not confirmed so that Eastern Christian research is in the stage of inferring possibility in the area of ??Korean Christian history. Second, the study of Eastern Christian missionary competence is going on by missionary practitioners who work in Central Asia and China, where Eastern Christianity, which was introduced through the Silk Road, had been played a significant role in history and scholars who specialize in local studies. Third, the study of Gyeongkyo, the Eastern Christianity flowed in China, has been mainly focused on the research as a part of the history of Chinese Christianity. Recently, in Korea it is expanding its research areas in various fields that are not only the history of chinese Christianity but also general history of china, china’s cultural studies, and East-West exchange history. Lastly, the subjects on Eastern Christianity in Korea are diversified and are gradually increasing by general historians and local researchers beyond the study of church history.
