The analysis of the early medieval documents shows evidently that the important institutions of vassalage in western Europe was established until the early 9th century mainly on the initiative of Charlemagne. In the first place, the feudal axis of vassalage came into existence through the combination of military service as a knight and 'beneficium'. Second, the obligations of protection and faithfulness which lord owed to his vassal were definitely prescribed, Third, we can see the obligations of fidelity and consultation which vassal owed to his lord were practised. Only vassal's aid obligation to his lord didn't appear in recorded sources. But we can't suppose that there was not actually such a practice, because documentary sources were scarce and aid was above all a sign of sincerity given in such a special occasion as lord's participation in crusade or wedding of his daughter.
Besides, as we see in a formation of vassalage between Pippin, a Carolingian first king and Tassilo, the duke of Bavaria in 757, ceremony forming feudal vassalage also was established just at the opening of the Carolingian dynasty. It consisted of homage ceremony putting a man's hands in another's hands and a Christian ceremony taking an oath of fealty with a hand touching saint's relics. In this time cavalry was armed with a coat of mail, helmet, lance, sword, bow and arrow and so on. This equipment was nearly on the same level with that of chivalrous heyday since 11th century. And what a man became a vassal armed with a riding horse and armament was honorary. Lastly, a kind of chivalrous culture such as tournament and hunting was too formed or forming.
