This article aims to show a syntactic analysis regarding English passive existential constructions under the recent minimalist frameworks of Chomsky (1995, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005). Comparing passive existential constructions and unaccusative existential constructions, I will suggest that only passive constructions have light verb phrase vP in their syntactic derivations while unaccusative constructions do not have vP but have VP. Based on Jaeggli (1986), Radford (2004) and other studies, I will argue that passive constructions have Strong Phase, not Weak Phase, and this will help us to make a distinction between passives and unaccusatives.
