The purpose of this study is to account for the status of vP-structure in English unaccusative constructions after establishing the reconstructed vP-structure. Making sure that various analyses of these constructions result from the non-uniformity of the VP-internal structure, we adopt the VP structure proposed in Chomsky (1995) in order to set up their vP-structures.
Our conclusion is that the VP-internal structure can be transformed with regard to the number of arguments and non-arguments, and the VP-Spec position, which is optional, depends on the presence or absence of prepositional phrases, differently from the VP-complement position. This conclusion suggests that the VP-Spec position cannot always be considered as the underlying DP-position.
Applying our reconstructed vP-structure to unaccusative and unaccusative -expletive constructions, we conclude that our alternative analysis produces more practical and explanatory results.
