This article deals with the relationship between class and publicness. As questions around publicness have become one of the crucial issues of modern society, this article aims to analyze the possibilities and limits of working class as a publicness-realizing agent. As a preliminary step, it is argued that there are three dimensions of publicness (process, acting subject, and contents) and that these dimensions are complementary and, sometimes, contradictory to one another. In the light of the dimensional fissures of publicness, Marxian concept of class entails both possibilities and limits. Indeed, Marxian discourse of working class provides a good ground for analyzing and criticizing the procedural dimension of publicness with some depth. Meanwhile, the discussion remains simple and even superficial when it comes to the questions of acting subject and contents of publicness. For a further elaboration of working class as a publicness-realizing actor, more in-depth discussions on additional considerations are needed. In this article, three additional factors (participation in public sphere, defining the contents of publicness, and putting some critical distance) are suggested.
