This is a study on crime specialization in criminal career in Korea. Specially, specialization hypothesis supported by Clarke and Cornish(1985) and generalization hypothesis supported by is tested through Markov-chain analysis. The data in this analysis is the police record(N=3,541 offences) of the male ex-offenders(N=988) who have been released in eleven prisons in 1987.
Analysis on this data shows that Markovian hypothesis - all transition probabilities from N-1th to Nth criminal career are statistically same, though the number of criminal career is changed - is supported. It shows that a crime-type transition is a pure probability process, and that generalization hypothesis is supported.
