The purpose of this study was to examine the socio-demographic characteristics and the comorbid psychiatric disorders and the effect of drug abuse on psychiatric symptoms and recidivism among the drug offenders. The study subjects were composed of three different sanctions groups(pre-trial divertion drug treatment group consist of 26, prison group consist of 114 and probation group consist of 115). The study included the items assessing the socio-demographic profiles, history of drug abuse criminal history and psychiatric symptomatology. Psychiatric assessments were based on self-control index, Impulsive scale, rapid alcohol problem screening, Substance abuse screening (KOADST-2), sex addict screening test, SCL-90-R,
According to the results, among drug offenders exposed by criminal sactions, the incidence rate of drug addict was 44.8%, the incidence rate of alcohol addict was 53.4%, and that of sex addict was 24.3% supposed to be needed with medical care. Among drug offenders, 10%~30% had suffered from comorbid psychiatric symptoms (somatiz ation, obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychotics). There were differences in comorbid psychiatric symptoms incidence rate among three different sanctions groups. From the perspective of the characteristics of drug abuse, criminal history and psychiatric symptomatology, pre-trial diversion drug treatment group were familiar with prison group. I suggest that the current criminal responding on drug users should be newly recontemplated and criticized for the reform of comprehensive and effective policy on the drug control.
