The purpose of this article is to draw some very broad recent changes which are currently being reflected in the policing, in their administration and in their interpretation. Expecially this article has two aims: to provide and analysis of the discourses on the changing forms and functions of late modern policing; and to examine their implications for policing, society and governance. Two such changes are identified: shifts in the role and status of the State(governance); and an altered perception of the significance of risk and market. An attempt is made to place each of theses within the prevailing context of neo-liberalism in political economic and social affairs. Some of the implications of these developments are then briefly indicated: the shift from welfare-focused crime prevention models to situational crime prevention models, the neoliberal restructure of late modern policing and reconstruction of state's roles in policing and governance('rule at a distance'), and the reenforced importance of security as consumption goods and the advent of contractual governance. This article will alert to the need to consider how, and to what extent, these changes impinge upon the discourse of crime prevention and policing.
