This dissertation examines the process that Beobhwa belief (法華信仰) of late-Shills developed to consider the effect of Buddism on social changes in Shilla.
In addition to Avalokitesvara belief (華嚴信仰), various forms of Beobhwa belief were developed gradually. There are examples relating to narration of Lotus Sutra, making a stone Sutra (石經) and putting it inside the pagoda. Some people became the head priest of a temple or even the most reverend priest only because they could narrate Lotus Sutra. Also, there are examples to pray for euthanasia or to practice Bohyunhang (普賢行) for the narration of Lotus Sutra. It is possible to guess that there were regular lecture meetings of Lotus Sutra in the example of the Beobhwa temple in Jeoksan (赤山法華院). Furthermore, monks illuminated the people by narrating Lotus Sutra, going around to the local population.
As Lotus Sutra was widespread, people of Shilla gradually understood the implicit meaning, decided to enter a priesthood, and experienced religion. In regard to drawing on active participation of all classes by the educative activity with the Sutra, Beobhwa belief made a significant contribution to the naturalization of Buddhism in Shilla. It is meaningful to cultivate narration culture and ascetic practices culture with Beobhwa belief.
