Examined in this article is the situation of the Buddhist society of the Goryeo dynasty's early half period, in which the Yuga-eob/瑜伽業 school's Buddhist priests had a tradition of embracing the 『Sutra of the Lotus/"Beobhwa-gyeong"』, and passed down such tradition from one generation to the next. We can see that through many examples: Haerin/海麟's explication lecture of the 『Sutra of the Lotus』, the task of courteously creating a transcription(사경) of the 『Sutra of the Lotus』 that was undertaken at the Geumsan-sa/金山寺 temple in 1081(35th year of King Munjong's reign), the task of creating an engraving(판각) of 『Beobhwa Hyeonchan』 which was overseen by Buddhist priest Sohyeon/韶顯, the task of collating several versions and correcting the errors in the contents of 『Hongchan Beobhwa-jeon/弘贊法華傳』 that was conducted by priest Deogyeon/德淵, and the Beobhwa-hwae/法華會 gathering that was held at the Sunggyo-sa/崇敎寺 temple in 1180(10th year of King Myeongjong's reign).
Among all these examples, the actions of Sohyeon deserve special notation. He was involved in the 『Sutra of the Lotus』' transcribing efforts at Geumsan-sa, and he led the task of engraving 『Beobhwa Hyeonchan』 and circulating the copies. He was the leader of the Yuga-eob school. He was essentially put in a competition with the Hwaeom-eob school, so he tried to solidify his own school's very identity, and not to mention grow the school, in terms of its overall influence throughout the society. The 『Beobhwa Hyeonchan』 project was also part of those efforts. He tried to help people have a better understanding of the 'Yushik' studies by providing them with a 'Yusik'-based interpretation of the 『Sutra of the Lotus』 which was relatively well known throughout the society. He also tried to define what Yuga-eob really was, by establishing the Yushik priests from Dang and Shilla dynasties who engaged in 『Sutra of the Lotus』 studies as the ones who legitimately originated the Yuga-eob tradition. The Yuga-eob school's tradition of embracing 『Sutra of the Lotus』 continued, with Deogyeon's correction of 『Hongchan Beobhwa-jeon』 and the Sunggyo-sa temple's Beobhwa-hwae gathering, which were all results of a certain coordinated effort to heighten the popularity of the 『Sutra of the not only sticked to the 『Sutra of the Lotus』 tradition upheld by the Yushik priests of Shilla and Dang, but also secured their own position inside the Buddhist community by doing so. Their actions clearly show us what was the general situation inside the Buddhist society at the time, and what were the social roles of the Yuga-eob school priests.
