While recent discussion on Shilla Buddhism depends entirely on Samgugyusa (三國遺事), compiled in the 13th century, Beobhwakyeongjibheomki (法華經集驗記) is very relevant as a resource that allows a perspective on Buddhist faith of Shilla. This paper examines the background and significance of Beobhwakyeongjibheomki compiled by Eui-jeok(義寂) with another work by the same author, Beobhwakyeonglonsulk(法華經論述記), as basis of evaluation.
Eui-jeok went to China and studied Yog?c?r?v?d?n, a field prominent in the capital of Tang. On his return to Shilla, he resided in Geumsan Temple(金山寺), the old Baek-jae area, by the order of the king. There he chose Beophwa belief(法華信仰) as a means to communicate with the descendents of old Baek-jae. This was in part because the tradition of Beophwa belief was held strongly by the old Baek-jae people, and also because Eui-jeok himself thought of Lotus Sutra(妙法蓮華經) as the supreme word of Buddha.
Eui-jeok preached using Beophwa miracle stories(法華靈驗談), and compiled the stories into Beobhwakyeongjibheomki. This book has the following features: First, its content consists of narration(讀誦), skipping(轉讀), sutra copying(書寫), and audition(聽聞); this is unique, and not in accordance with miracle stories of China of the period. The audition section particularly attracts the uneducated as its potential readers. Secondly, the book stresses belief in Lotus Sutra . Thirdly, it emphasizes the existence of hell. It consoles people, fatigued by warfare, by stressing that charitable deeds depicted in Lotus Sutra may relieve the torments of the damned and help them reincarnate in a better place.
As Beobhwakyeongjibheomki was widely circulated, Beophwa belief pervaded Shilla. Belief based on Sutra was gradually extended to belief surrounding Dharma sarira(法舍利), and this in itself became a typical characteristic of Shilla Buddhism.
