The Lotus Sutra inherits the tradition of dharma-keepers’ own in the development of Buddhism. From Early Buddhism to Abhidharma Buddhism, it is assumed that the two genealogy of dharma-keepers and precept-keepers has differently developed, which is the source of Lotus Buddhist movement together with Mahayana Buddhist movement.
Those who advocated Lotus Buddhism expressed a variety of historical events which have occurred since the period of Early Buddhism mythologically or symbolically in that the Lotus Sutra takes over dharma-keepers" tradition. They denied the convention of existing Buddhism and instead stressed the necessity of innovative Buddhist movement by giving a predicative sign on the future to the representatives of dharma-keepers" genealogy, by asserting women"s attaining enlightenment, and by trying to integrate different faiths in the Buddha’s teaching.
Actually, those who advocated innovative Buddhism took a serious view of dharma instructors in charge of practicing the main idea of the Lotus Sutra. In terms of dharma-keepers’ inheritors, dharma instructors tend to show a strong sense of a leader in that they are not only pilars in building the Buddha Land but also leaders who make man and heaven happy and comfortable. Dharma instructors are not confined to renunciators.
As it reads in the five types of dharma instructors in the chapter of Dharma instructors, anyone who receives the Lotus Sutra, recites and reads it, or anyone who interpreters and writes it can be a dharma instructor. Hence, this idea accepts the common characteristic of mahayana Buddhism, which accentuates anyone can be a boddhisattva, and it also shows that the Lotus Sutra hands down dharma-keepers" tradition well.
