King Gongmin married Queen Hye (Lee), Queen Ik (Han), Queen Jung (Ahn) and Queen Shin (Yeom) in addition to Princess Noguk in his reign. These investitures of queens in the reign of King Gongmin were related to the political operation of him. However, studies about this issue have been insufficient until now.
This paper aims to search the feature of royal marriages in the late Goryeo and pay attention to the investitures of queens in the reign of King Gongmin. For this purpose, I examine the royal marriages and the families of queens in the period of Yuan intervention and try to show how these situations affect investitures of queens in the reign of King Gongmin. I review the families of Queen Hye, Queen Ik, Queen Jung and Queen Shin and search the historical meanings of them.
I reach the conclusion as follows. King Gongmin led the elimination of the pro-Yuan power in the decline of influence of Yuan and pursued the reinforcement and stabilization of royal authority. He also made an effort to get heirs and to operate political affairs smoothly. He changed the method to invest queens The investitures of queens in this period reflected the tendency of royal marriages in the period of Yuan intervention, but the subjects of investitures expanded to the royal family and another powerful families in addition to the princesses of the Yuan dynasty. The investitures of queens of royal family and another powerful families symbolize the political compromise with leading powers in political situation. This method reflect the way how to King Gongmin operate politics. Inversely this method is seen as the mean for the protection of royal family and the recovery of weakened political base.
