During the Kangdo time period, Mongols invaded the Korye Kingdom on the Korean peninsula. The Korye government fled to Kangwha Island and the island became the capital of the Korye Kingdom for 40 years. However, it had never been properly investigated by archaeological method.
The first step to understanding the Kangdo time period was to analyze the defensive systems and locations of castles and fortresses on Kangwha Island. Fortunately, recent salvage excavations provided us important archaeological data allowing us to understand fortress systems.
For example, recently excavated Jungsung showed a very unique fortress construction technology called "mud-rampart." At the bottom, 100㎝ below the surface, stone foundation was located 98-103㎝ wide and 25-30㎝ thick. Inside, clusters of stones provided support to the walls of the building. Another stone structure was found on the opposite side of the wall. This stone structure was 98-102㎝ wide and 20-26㎝ thick. Below the stone line, wooden-pole holes served as support to the mud construction.
Tile piles were found in the southern area of the stone structure. The tile piles were 10㎝ thick and 315㎝ wide.
These tiles were made by the same methods of pottery for making roof tiles. The tiles were recycled fragments from various times and places. The tile piles played a role in preventing the mud from sliding down the slope.
By cutting through the wall and examining its profile, we were able to analyze Korye construction methods. The Korye people built a wooden mold supported by wooden poles. Then, they stamped in mud repeatedly. They repeated this process of setting up wooden poles and stamping in mud to construct the wall (mud rampart) section by section.
The fortress used the natural slopes of the mountain and showed typical Korye Kingdom construction techniques. The excavations of the fortress provided us important archeological data to understand the Kangdo time period.
