Increased globalization of sales activities, differences of customer needs, and intensive competitiveness are creating high degree of environmental uncertainty in the export markets. Under these circumstances, strategic flexibility is very important to improve performance.
According to many previous researchers, strategic flexibility leads to accumulation of these competencies and it will provide naturally superior export performance. Even though the benefits of strategic flexibility have been recognized for several years, empirical studies have not been conducted enough.
This study tries to disclose antecedents of strategic flexibility and consequences of strategic flexibility. To achieve this purpose, the authors reviewed the previous literatures and suggested the empirical link among various antecedents, strategic flexibility, and export performance.
After the review of exant studies, the authors designed a research model and proposed five hypotheses. Based on the collected 232 Korean export firms' data, various results and implications were extracted.
Because learning orientation and IT competence are very important antecedents of strategic flexibility, Korean export firms which try to increase the level of strategic flexibility must have high level of learning orientation and IT competence.
Like the many results of previous studies, strategic flexibility is helpful to acquire superior export performance in foreign markets. Strategic flexibility especially give greater positive effect on export performance of firms which facing to higher competitive level. Based on this result, firms which want to get superior export performance in competitive foreign markets should invest various their resources in improving strategic flexibility.
