JungMongJu(鄭夢周) is a great man today. He is a symbol of the loyality for Goryo dynasty. And he has respected for a excellent schola to Neo-confucian so called SungLiHak(性理學). Also JungMongJu saved the people who had captured by the Japanese pirates. He is a great diplomatic official.
It is a dramatic event which JungMongJu s death is the end of Goryo dynasty. His death is a historical truth but we have known very well to his death s story. I like this story when I was young. However his death's story is true? No. Frankly speaking his death's story is not true. This story have three important points.
First, about the meeting of JungMongJu and LeeBangWon(李芳遠). Two person met at LeeSungGe's house before the death of JungMongJu. JungMongJu and LeeBangWon wrote a poem which had a question and answer to Goryo dynasty's destiny. This poems had put in the book at 18'c. But the book published by the son of JungMongJu, this poems have not. Then I doubt this poem's writer, which is not JungMongJu.
Second, This is a doubt about the location of his death. He had dead to the bridge named SunJuckKyo(善竹橋). We know SunJuckKyo is not named originally. Origin name is SunJikyo. But This name is changed by the his death. It is not found the records of book named Goryosa(高麗史). SunJuckKyo's story has mentioned to the books after 17'c. Truly I have known the location of his death, where is the near JungMongJu s house.
Third, We have known the story of a dead man with JungMongJu. This man is named KimGungJo(金慶祚). But his name is not known to people early. I think his name to make it for the worship of loyality. The legend have made a historical truth.
We know the estimation of JungMongJu has changed by times. In 15'c this estimation was not good. Because he was against Chosen dynasty. But his reputation recovered by LeeBangWon, king TaeJong(太宗). This is a historic irony. King Taejong gave a offical post to JungMongJu's sons.
In 16'c Sarim group had paid respect to JungMongJu for their great master. They argued about a religious service in private schools called SeoWom(書院).
The story of JungMongJu's death had made a complete drama in 17'c. His myth had spread out to people. JungMongJu was very significant person who is a symbol of loyality. His death location was known by people is called the bridge SunJuckKyo at this time. King YoungJo(英祖) had built a monument at SunjukKyo. SunJuckKyo had been a code of JungMongJu's image.
In 19'c JungMongJu's story made to a novel. This novel's name is SunJuckKyo and written by Hangul. After this novel, JungMongJu's myth has influenced on us. We has believed this myth to a history today. But I think a historian have to know a difference to myth and history.
