The contemporary discussion about death and its ritual is focused on the privatization of death ritual and the exclusion of death in every day life. The religious system is considered as a subsystem which supports the society by giving the holistic meaning of death.
The privatization of death and its ritual may vanish the holistic approach to death and life from individuals. For this reason, the privatization of death and its ritual could be a obstacle which should be overcome for the holistic meaning of death.
A death hurts the heart of the bereaved. However, the message of death can easily turn into that of resurrection in the Korean Protestant death ritual. If Protestants don’t mention about the reality of death even in this ritual, there is no chance to reflect seriously on death and life.
Korean Protestants have to overcome the privatization of death ritual and the exclusion of death in every day life. For this purpose, they should resist the socioeconomic pressure to commercialize this ritual. Furthermore, they must enrich the meaning of a transition stage in death ritual as the rite of passage.
