In the early modern East Asia, western protestant missionaries have made a great contribution to the Western-Eastern bilingual lexicography. For example, Robert Morrisson’s A dictionary of the Chinese language(1815～1823) in China, J. C. Hepburn’s A Japanese and English Dictionary(1867) in Japan, and H. G. Underwood’s A Concise Dictionary of the Korean Language(1890) in Korea is the first product of the modern bilingual dictionary in each countries. In many ways, they have exercised a tremendous influence on the nation-building and the formation of modern national language in East Asia, and at the same time, have made channel for lingua-cultural tide from the Western. The premodern traditional lingua-culture of East Asia and the modern lingua-culture of the Western was hegemonicly conflicting and negotiating in the bilingual dictionaries in the early modern period. They can be called as a ‘field’ of language and culture as a concept of Pierre Bourdieu which means an arena for ‘articulating’ between Western languages, especially English, and Eastern languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
