This paper tries to study how general discourse about cafe waitresses is produced through articles about them of the popular magazines, Samchully and Beolgeongon in 1930s. The current study on cafe waitresses just reproduces and understands 1930s and defines their identity.
Waitresses are the historical existence who reproduced Joseon's modern contradictions through many dominant relationship in the colonial society. They exist as subaltern of colonialism. And through many upper classes who have relationship with them, they can be analyzed by postcolonialism. So They was examined based on Resistance Discourse of the colonized by Fanon and Baba and Post-Colonial feminism by Spivak in postcolonialism.
Cafe waitresses wore the mixed clothes of Japan and the West in Joseon and provides sexual service for men. Waitresses were powerless women who lived in Joseon of patriarchy and, at the same time, she had mixed appearance. So the writing staffs who were colonial intellectuals used waitresses as a tool to clean up their own complex and incapacity and recover their pride.
Waitresses are in conflict with general women with men between them as well as mean opposition between Joseon and Japan. They have something in common with the modern women in their appearance and origin (came from intellectuals and actresses) but they became corrupt by love or poverty.
Gisaeng (Korean geisha) who worked in demimonde together were judged as artists but waitresses were done as entertainment women who simply sold smile and their image is more negative than Gisaeng. At the same time, they have the double relationship that they substitute for the central place of love discourse that Gisaeng enjoyed waitresses
