This paper analyzes the representation of woman in The Taming of the Shrew films directed by Sam Taylor and Franco Zeffirelli, and situates them as cultural practices within the social and cultural context. As a site of cultural struggle and change in which the female subject is constantly in the process of production and negotiation, Shakespearean films are commentaries on both Shakespeare and the 20th century culture.
While portraying Katherina as a New Woman in the 1920s who attempts to refuse male dominance and overthrow the male world, Sam Taylor's film (1929) reproduces one of the most cherished male fantasies that women remain untamed, even in subjection. By identifying the camera eye with Katheina's, Franco Zeffirelli's film (1966) establishes her as a subject rather than object of gaze and desire. Furthermore, the film calls into question the androcentric dichotomy that defines woman either as a shrew or as an obedient wife. However, the film represents Katherina as an idealized 1960s housewife who dedicates herself to tidying up a neglected house.
