This paper explores the distributions of ne, not, na during the Middle English (ME) period and attempts to explain diachronic changes of sentential negation within a framework of negative cycle. The examination of the data in four sub-periods reveals that chronological specifications of the cycle by Denison (1993), Beukema and Tomi? (1995) are incorrect. It is found that the constructions with ne, not, na alone and [ne ... not], [ne ... na] could occur simultaneously in the same period. This paper differs from previous studies in the following: First, contrary to Kemenade (2000), not did not replace na in the transition from Old English (OE) to ME, but they were both introduced in the same period and persisted until the end of ME although [ne ... na] disappeared slightly earlier. Second, the fact that na alone can make sentential negation in ME raises a problem to Kemenade's scenario, while it can be well accounted for by the new proposal. Third, the demise of ne was not caused by the introduction of not but is due to its own phonetic attrition. With the demise of ne, not took over its grammatical function because not was in a more advantageous position than its competitor na in terms of its phonetic and semantic status.
