The major purpose of this paper is to give a diachronic description of the cyclic development of sentential negation in English by demonstrating that it is the showcase of a complicate interplay between various negation positions and syntactic change. By employing Kemenade (2000)'s negative cycle framework, we understand that the negator ne begins to lose its force due to the declination of the inflection in Late Old English and Early Middle English. In the course of losing negative property by the loss of the inflection, sentential negation in English holds a strong tendency to keep its negative property due to isomorphism. After that, the negator not began to appear at the head position of NegP to reinforce negative property in the sentence. This kind of negative cyclic change is motivated by the reflection of a long-term diachronic process. Secondly, this paper will attempt to analyze the development of sentential negation from the view point of the generative theory. Specifically, the current generative theory allows us to account for NegP node of projecting grammatical categories such as the negator within the standard phrase structure format. This perspective gives us a precise and insightful account of the relevant negative structure and the historical development of NegP.
