This paper reviews the interpretation of the crisis of the nobility of early modem France, hardened as a fixed idea. On the basis of lots of discourses french modem historians, marxists or conservatists, have agreed that french nobility ruined through the Religion War and the Inflation of the 16th century, and the revolts of the 17th century. Such a crisis' interpretation of the nobility has been functioned as a fomula of the transition into the modem society, endorsing the theory on the formation of the absolute monarchy and the growth of the bourgeoisie. On the other side, as apposed to this is the image of the 18th century's nobility who become a bastion of multiples privileges and challenges the monarchal authority. In order to get over this contradictory and discontinuous view-points between the 16~17th century's nobility and that of the 18th century, indebted to the recent revisionist interpretations, this paper primarily criticizes and revises the discourses of the Old Regime.
In conclusion, this paper focuses on the attitudes of the nobility who copes flexibly with historical changes. It is true that a status of the nobility hasn't been stable in the process of disorganization of the feudal society. But the nobility recovers a vitality through self-metamorphosis. It succeeds in building its body and making it bulky by appropriating new blood, new money and new talents from below. And then it amasses a large fortune by lending the state and, in the end, becomes a main group of unequality and suppression, monopolizing high positions of government, judiciary, armies, and churches.
