Since Gapung (familial traditions) is a term that signifies pride in one’s Gamun (family line), it is likely to be recognized for use only by the high nobility. According to the promotion rules of Hyangri (minor nobility) enacted in the 5th year of King Munjong (1414~1452), the status of Hyangri were divided into three levels on the basis of familial tradition. This clearly shows that Gapung was not established from the background of the high nobility and the top ranked Hyangri took pride as honored family (myeongjok) until the time of King Munjong.
Such familial traditions were established by Hojok at the end of the Silla period. Since the existing status order was destroyed due to collapse of the Golpum system, the Hojok that emerged as new elites stressed familial tradition as the grounds of their superiority in their status as a ruling class. The descendants of a family with Gapung in local society were minor nobility in local society, but they also advanced to the national government. To advance to national level, however, they were subject to the procedure of Gyeonbyeolyupum established by Sasimgwan, and their family line was examined.
During the Goryeo period, nobility existed not only at the national level, but in local society. The local nobility was divided into 2 types; the first emerged at the beginning of the Goryeo period and remained dominant in local society. The second were members of the central administration who returned to their hometown after retirement. In spite of these variations in status, all were proud of their family line. Such pride in status was based on the local society where familial traditions were established.
