This essay analyzes a state of Humjocheo(險阻處) at that time, and the historical meaning of its rough route in Goryeo Dynasty. The concept of Humjocheo has the apparent meaning of the obstacle of transportation but connotes an important traffic. There were many unexpected accidents by occasion of the disadvantages of the condition of transport at the places. By the reason that the traffics were the main routes of materials and people robbers came up frequently and some people gained improper gains with the abusing of those conditions. These places were also used as the fortresses with their rough terrains in a period of war or chaos time.
There were many efforts to compensate for the disadvantages. The most active attempt was the excavating of the transportation route which replaced the marin one. Further substantial facilities were built around the slopes, and traffic facilities like guest house were constructed before the main marin Humjocheo. It costs the extra labour forces in great and small to do the maintenance activities of Humjocheo and transportation activities on the rough routes.
It was a burden to go through the dangerous traffics though the maintenance activities. Its difficulties were the important factors in fixing the cost of transportation and the choice of Rice-warehouse(漕倉) which was the base of marine transportation. The overland traffics of the coast which were around the Humjocheo got also used as a substitution route to avoid those troubles.
