The Changdando-ro route originated from the traditional traffic route connecting two plains of the Korean peninsula, the southwestern and northeastern regions. It also functioned as the main traffic route connecting Kaegy ng, the capital of Kory dynasty, with the southern regions of the Korean peninsula during the early era of the dynasty. However, its importance gradually decreased from King Munjong’s era, the mid 11th century, and its role as the main traffic route was substituted by the Imjindo-ro route located to the west of it. Even until the end of the Kory dynasty the Imjindo-ro route was regarded as the main traffic route connecting Kaegy ng with the southern regions. On the other hand, the Changdando-ro route, despite its decline in status after the era of King Munjong’s reign, continued to function as a military road or a detour of the Imjindo-ro route until the end of the dynasty.
The reasons for the prominence of the Imjindo-ro route from the mid 11th century were firstly the shorter distance between Kaegy ng and the Han river when using the Imjindo-ro route. The second was that the population and local products produced along the Imjindo-ro route became more abundant due to the successful exploitation of these regions unfolding from the foundation of the dynasty. The third was that Namgy ng (Southern Capital) built on a key point of the Imjindo ro route became the third capital in the era of King Munjong’s reign. This factor was the most effective in developing the Imjindo-ro route.
The project for relocating Namgy ng to a new place could be accomplished on the basis of the remarkable development in the regions directly connected by the Imjindo-ro route. Several kinds of geomantic theories and the existence of powerful figures emerging from Namgy ng and its neighboring regions also became important backgrounds in elevating the status of Namgy ng as the southern hub of the Kory dynasty, so that status of the city was enhanced after the 11th century. Accordingly, the existence of Namgy ng in this sense was one of the prerequisites guaranteeing the development of the Imjindo-ro route. In addition, the prosperity of both Namgy ng and the Imjindo-ro route brought some major changes in local administration and the postal system of the Ky nggi and Namgy ng regions.
