This paper aims to examine aesthetic consciousness of literary magazine Munjang through texts translated and published in it and the meaning of those translated texts in Munjang centering around 「近古東西奇文選」(Collection of Eccentric Writings from modem times, ancient times, the East and the West) by Yang Joo-dong.
If intellectuals of modem enlightenment period recognized translation as the essential method of contacting 'civilization' and going into the 'civilization', in Munjang, translation had another meaning under the Japanese colonial rule, At the period when modernization reached its peak, translation had the meaning of choosing or excluding another culture beyond contacting civilization. Therefore, the sense of identity about translation was to be reflected in the text. Translated texts in Munjang can be classified into as follows, except clippings briefly introducing recent states of the world and one-off and timely translations.
First, texts published under the title 「戰線文學選」(Collection of War literature) Second, translation of western novels sorted by the title 「海外文學選」(Collection of Foreign Literature), Third, 「近古東西奇文選」 translated by Yang Joo-dong. 「戰線文學選」was a reportage and war literature and the Japanese Government General of Korea might have pressured the magazine editors. Therefore, it functioned as the media of propagating the ideology of colonization. As for 「海外文學選」and clippings, editors of Munjang might have selected them as a way of communicating with the world literature and it belonged to the common characteristics of translation.
Therefore, 「近古東西奇文選」was problematic in discussing the nature of translation in Munjang in the following points. Firstly, it was serialized more than 10 times. In Munjang, projects published more than 10 times or received continuous attention were 「戰線文學選」, Munjang Ganghwa, Translation of Classic Novels and so on. The fact that 「近古東西奇文選」 was planned and serialized indicates that it occupied an important position in Munjang. Secondly, translator was specified and was one person, As for 「戰線文學選」or clippings, translator was not specified. This is problematic in that there was no one responsible for the mistranslation and it was impossible to see whether translator's consciousness of writing style or consciousness of translation was reflected in the translation. Lastly, it is very important that 「近古東西奇文選」focused on new 'sentence' regardless of recentness, antiquity, the East and the West. In deed, 「近古東西奇文選」attempted a cultural contact among modem times, ancient times, the East and the West.
