It is very difficult to have an overall understanding of 195 poems published in Munjang. Munjang was not the literary magazine for writers from specific trends or schools of literary thoughts. It published poems of 55 poets and it is not too much to say that almost all prominent poets of that period published their poems in Munjang. Therefore, it would be very difficult to find out the characteristics of poems published in Munjang according to a single standard.
Among poems in Munjang, Poems by Jeong Ji-yong and Paek Seok are influenced by the ‘old’. They accepted the past literary tradition and developed a new form, and extended the context of temporal and spatial meanings of poems. This paper confirmed the intensity of admiration for the past in poems by Jo Ji-hoon and Park Jong-hwa. These are examples of the influence of the ‘old’ in Munjang. Especially, intense admiration expressed in their poems is an extreme of taste in antique or classicism shown in poems of Munjang. Jeong Ji-yong mobilized sense to restore the world of landscape in his later poems. His sense was obtained from the tradition of the Orient. The ‘new’, an elaborate and detailed sense succeeded and developed by Jeong Ji-yong and the ‘old’, an inclination for taste in antique or classicism of Munjang meet.
The relation between 195 poems by 55 poets and the inclination for taste in antique or classicism of Munjang is very distinctive. This paper made detailed investigation into how the characteristics of Munjang was reflected in all poems published in Munjang or how each poet reacted to this characteristics. And with this investigation, it examined how the inclination for taste in antique or classicism of Munjang permeated into the characteristics of poems in that period and how it was modified by each poet. As with the case of Jeong Ji-yong, poems in Munjang showed the aspects of mixing the ‘old’ and the ‘new.’ Classifying poems in Munjang into the ‘old’ and the ‘new’, this paper clarified that these two were not in opposition but in the process of compromising. The old and the new are distinguished externally, however, the difference is not so great except the primary characteristics of subject matter and form. This paper revealed that there is no value rank between the ‘old’ and the ‘new.’ They were equal and parallel at the same time. In poems of Munjang, the ‘old’, presented with the inclination for taste in antique or classicism and the ‘new’ of those days, products of modern era coexisted together.
