Iexamine a long history of Western humanities from the classical Ancient to post-modernity, with analogizing with a short history of Korean humanities after the Korean Liberation (1945) in this essay. In doing so, I make three types of humanities the building-blocks of this essay, the first of which might be called ‘introspective humanities', the second ‘extrospective humanities', and the third ‘nomadic humanities.' While Western humanities in Ancient and Middle Ages had emphasized on the human integrity and their education for the self-realization, those in Modern Age developed the externalization of knowledge for man, society, and artifacts and for nature and universe (interpreted by human beings) as well. Today, in post-modern perspective, humane knowledge is being a kind of communicative tool by which I mean any ‘solution' for each social and/or natural problem. If we still need humanities today, it is not just for ‘knowing thyself!' or ‘reading you and your society meticulously as like explaining natural things objectively’, but also for ‘responding yourself to nomadic demands from society and/or nature’.
