석주 이상룡의 문장관은 수기치인(修己治人)의 의리ㆍ명분을 펼치는 문장으로 볼 수 있다. 전통 유교담론에 충실하게 공동체를 이끌었던 그는 의리와 명분에 어긋나지 않은 지언행(知言行)의 세계를 보여주었다. 조인석은 문장을 통해 사람을 교육하는 실용적인 길을 걸었으며 덕성함양(德性涵養)과 생활개선을 교육하는 문장을 과감하게 선택하였다. 더 나아가 허구적인 문장을 통해 효과적인 교육방법을 모색하였다. 문장에 대한 의식이 분화되던 시기의 인물인 오일도는 당시 풍미하는 근대문예사조를 따르기보다는 조부의 유업으로 드러나는 전통가치를 개인이 내면화하여 공동체의 선을 목적에 두는 글쓰기를 시도하였다. 더구나 전통장르 한시를 창작하면서 언어형식을 통해 전통을 지속적으로 계승해냈던 것이다.
이상룡, 조인석, 오일도는 이들은 동일한 문화풍토에서 자란 공통항이 있다. 특히 영남지역을 고향으로 두고 유년을 보낸 이들에게 전통문화로서 유교사유는 대단히 직접적인 영향력을 행사하였다. 구한말, 개화기, 식민지를 통과 해방기 자리까지 유학적 사유는 이들과 무관하지 않았으며 가족의 끈으로 묶이면서 지속적인 영향력을 행사했다. 구한말, 개화기, 식민지 시기는 이세 인물이 모두 다른 연령대에서 통과했던 시대이므로 그 만큼 전통세계가 강고하게 유지되었다. 해방기에 이르면 조인석, 오일도가 역시 연령대를 달리하면서 통과하는데 이들에게 전통가치는 여전히 유효한 현실조건으로 놓여 있었다.
이상룡, 조인석 등은 철저한 유교사유 훈련을 받은 세대이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 석주는 한일합병 이후 근대세계로 의식을 변화시켜 새로운 문물에 대한 개방적 입장을 고수하면서 주체적인 독립을 위해 행동하는 지식인의 전형이 되었다. 조인석의 경우, 보수적인 마을을 개화하도록 이끌고 남녀평등을 교육에서 실천한 인물이다. 문중단위 일가친척들이 대부분이나 이들이 변화된 세계를 수용하고 새로운 문화를 배울 수 있는 기반을 마련하는 일을 앞장서서 실천한다. 오일도는 이념에 휩쓸리지 않으면서 민족 주체성을 중심에 둔 세계관을 보인다. 해방공간에서 좌ㆍ우익 갈등이 첨예할 때 역사적인 시각에서 당시 문제를 보는 객관적인 입장도 견지한다. 이런 그의 세계관은 일제의 징용과 공출 등 잔인한 식민정책의 현장을 작품으로 구체화하는 일로 연결된다.
