According to both Marxist approach and modernization theory, periodic peasant markets are to be displaced by daily markets along the industrialization. If we find periodic markets in developing societies, they are regarded to be symbol of poverty in the third world. It is an abnormal phenomenon.
During the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, periodic markets in Korea grew rapidly in terms of both the number of markets and the volume of trade in spite of colonial industrialization. The coexistence of periodic markets and industrialized market economy has long been interpreted as a clear clue of colonial distortion. However, this kind of interpretation itself strengthens eurocentric historiography which regards the western path as a normal model.
Hur's new work goes beyond this ironic colonial complex. She finds motive of market growth in people's dynamic collective action as well as distorted colonial economic structure. Her work will be a landmark, because it is the virtually first thorough volume of this field.
It produces several important points at issue. First, she explains the growth of periodic markets as a complex process which was accompanied by tremendous establishment and abolishment of markets. It was a very dynamic process. However, in my opinion, it did not result in the change of market structure. Second, she regards periodic markets as collective goods of the region, but they were being changed into sites of economic investment at that time. Third, she respects people's collective action as potentially political activity, still any resistance can be converted to functionally integrated factor of the political order.
These points in question have very contemporary implications, because they addresses the relation between economic interests and publicity, the relation between power and resistance, and the problem of regional trust which needs proper apparatuses, rules and processes. This productive work paves the way for further discussions and researches of the field.
