The present study has been concerned with the sociocultural context of the periodic market in the Sangju region.
Marketplace is a site, which is naturally formed for the transaction or trade of commodities. The periodic market in Korean society has long played a pivotal role in traditional trade. In particular, it has been an economic, social, and cultural center in rural area.
The periodic market in Korea has declined since the mid-1970s when industralization and urbanization began to be proceeded more conspicuously. Its number diminished 750 in the late 1980s and 500 in 2002. Besides, its functions have also weakened. The decline of the market has been, of course, greatly influenced by the expansion of world-wide capitalism.
Nonetheless, this research suggests that the periodic market in rural society is still playing an important role. That is to say, the market provides locals and merchants with a place, which enables their meanings and values to be practiced. The major findings of this study are as follows:
First, since the 1980s the periodic market in the Sangju region has undergone a significant change in terms of its system. Such a change has resulted from both general and regional factors, which accelerated the integration and reorganization of the market and the appearance of a new market system.
Second, the periodic market in rural area is being still utilized as an important place. which enables diverse people to establish their social relationships, even if such a phenomenon was somewhat weakened, compared with the past days.
Third, the cultural function of the periodic market is also still identified, although such a function has nearly disappeared due to the development of transportation and communication technology, and modern mass media. Such merchants as taffy sellers provide locals with exciting performances, selling their commodities.
Finally. traders and consumers have maintained diverse cultural norms and inertia. Hence, in spite of their objective conditions of existence, periodic markets will not be banished in a short-term. even though they show a continuous decrease in their number as time passes.
There can be no doubtful that the problem of the periodic market has a direct relation with that of rural communities. Its solution should be also discussed in the same context.
