A Russian novelist Anatoly Kim’s interest in the Chuang Tzu philosophy is beyond the analogical interpretation that he has a strong oriental flavor as a member of the third generation of Korean immigrants to Russia. The Taoism which is reflected in the figures of Lokhov in 《Lotus》 and Nikolai in 《Father-Forest》 makes demonstrations of the author’s deep concern about the oriental philosophy. The similarity between A. Kim’s Weltanschauung and Taoism is reconfirmed by the understanding of the whole creation in the universe as an energy flow.
Rapid shifting of time and place which gives hard time for the readers of A. Kim to understand is closely related with the Taoism which interprets all things as the flowing of energy. The concept that the flow of energy is organically related with all nature such as trees, stones, and animals, is one of the main sources of understanding of A. Kim’s work in which appears various transformations. In his works there is no distinction between life and death since the death is not the end of life, but a continuation of selftransformation. The same is true to A. Kim’s narrative methods appeared in his major novels. Lokhov and Nikolai in the works of A. Kim are the characters of the attainment of supreme wisdom. In other words, they are the men of great spiritual awakening, who are able to find the true selves identified with the Tao.
A man is able to be the one of the true ‘we’ come out of ‘I’, when he attains the stage of denying self-consciousness. It becomes the foundation to understand A. Kim’s Weltanschauung. Likewise, A. Kim is a novelist of the two traditions of the East and the West, who adopts oriental spiritualism as well as who is in the tradition of Russian literature and culture.
