This study investigates the use of Japanese back-channels (BCs) used by JSL learners.
The focus of this study is on whether there is a difference in the use of BCs depending on their user s gender. In order to examine this two types of analyses were conducted; (a) analysis based on the frequency and (b) an analysis of the kind of back-channel expressions (Aizuchi-shi), compared to data from Japanese natives.
The informants were 5 advanced learners of Japanese who were all native speakers of English and they were told to have a conversation with a Japanese person on any topic. Each conversation was video and audio recorded.
In analysis (a), regarding overall frequency of BCs, Japanese learners seemed to use more BCs than native speakers. There seemed to a no clear gender difference. However, when looking at individual categories (Aizuchi-shi, repeating, rephrasing and nodding), it was found that male learners are more likely to use nodding than female learners. That means, female learners tend, rather than just nodding silently, to use voiced BCs with or without nodding. On the contrary, Japanese native speaker females tend to use ‘nodding’ more than Japanese males.
In analysis (b), all Aizuchi-shi are categorized into 5 types: the non-lexical type, the lexical type, the So-type, the non-lexical+lexical type and the non-lexical+So-type. As a result, both learners and native speakers use non-lexical Aizuchi-shi the most frequently regardless of their gender. On the other hand, lexical Aizuchi-shi or Aizuchi-shi which includes lexical Aizuchi-shi seemed to be used by both female native speakers and learners more often than males.
