For the past decade, the area of studying the history of Korean’s everyday lives in the past, grew significantly large, compared to any other areas of historical studies, in terms of both academic research and public awareness. Yet the identity of this area of studies is still very unclear. Various types of works and papers were categorized as historical studies of Koreans' everyday lives in the past, only because they shared the commonality of containing portions that mentioned or commented upon the people’s lives in details to some extent.
In Korea, studies of Koreans' everyday lives, have been conducted as a type of historical studies in the vein of social historical studies. It resembles the social historical studies that were suggested and announced by the first and second generations of the renowned Annales school. Historical studies of the mentality of the people in the past, or historical studies concentrating upon the microscopic details of the past('micro-history') are yet to be found or discussed in Korea, and studies that could be described as ‘new cultural historical studies’ are only recently attempted by a handful of researchers.
Yet the achievements of historical studies dealing with Korean's everyday lives in the past are never trivial. Historical facts that were hidden behind preconceptions are being revealed, and the lives of the people who were at the bottom of the society's food chain are now being partially explored. And the overall results are inspiring other areas of history as well, such as social historical studies and economic historical studies.
And at the same time, many issues that should be addressed and resolved remain as well. Securing new materials for consultation, and developing new methods and methodology are rather urgent matters. Otherwise, case studies would not be able to go forward, and further discussions in this area would halt.
