This is a study on the relation between Koguryo and Silla viewed in the war history from the 3th to the 5th century. According to Samguksagi, there are some records of battles and negotiations between the two countries in the middle of the 3rd century. It has been understood that Koguryo did not have enough power to invade Silla in the past. Because there were commanderies of Lolang(樂浪郡) and Daifang(帶方郡), Okjeo(沃沮), Dongye(東濊) between the two countries. Also, Koguryo suffered tile invasion of Gwan Gu-geom(244~245). However, the Gwan' s invasion was in 246, Okjeo and Dongye belonged to Koguryo at that time. So it is possible to think that Koguryo attacked the north edges of Silla by way of those countries.
For understanding of the war history of Koguryo against Silla in the 5th century, it is important to comprehend the time that Koguryo stopped intervention in Silla. In this study, it was understood that the Koguryo power interfered in tile domestic affairs of Silla pull out of the sobaek mountains in the middle of tile 5th century by an analysis of fortification and combat areas to Kogyryo in King Jabi and Soji' s region.
Koguryo had 6 times of battles against Silla in the northwest side of the Sobaek mountains and the east coast side in the late of 5th century. In those wars, Koguryo generally took power play, allied forces of Silla and Baekje(羅濟同盟軍) stood on the defensive against it. Though the chances were in Koguryo s favor in the early stage of the war, Koguryo could not get tile final victory because of the allies. The allies of Silla and Baekje effectively carried out a defensive fight against Koguryo. As a result, the southward expansion policy(南進政策) propelled by King Jangsu and Munja had been frustrated after all.
