This paper aims to analyze the history and urban development process of Seongnam City. The results of this study are as follow.
Seongnam, keeping many cultural heritages of prehistoric age, was an important stage for the Hanseong period of the Baikje Kingdom. After that time, Seongnam was considered a point of strategic and political importance by each dynasty. And Seongnam was a place in connection with some new gentries in the later part of the Koryo Dynasty and practical scientists in the later part of the Choson Dynasty. And Seongnam was a place that has the painful memory of the 'Beong ja ho lan' and a place of anti-imperialism in the cause of loyalty in the later part of Choson Dynasty. It is also a place in which the 3·1 Movement took place under the Japanese colonial rule.
After the establishment of the government of the Republic of Korea. Seongnam was slowly beginning to change from a rural to an urban region. This change took a sudden turn after the 1960s, when the government promoted 'Kwangju large-scale complex' project. In the late 1980s, the overnment again promoted 'Bundan new town development project'. With the promotion of the two development project. Seongnam grew quickly as a megalopolis in Seoul region.
Urbanization of Seongnam is characterized not by autonomy but by heteronomy. So, even if Seongnam grew as a megalopolis with the one million population, but it has many roblems inside. For example, disproportion of industrial structure, dividing of city life zones, absence of culture, etc.
Recently, various efforts are concentrated on correcting the deformity of city structure and strengthening autonomy by the local government and many citizens' organizations. For example, the local government is promoting redevelopment for the old area, construction of a new administrative town, excavation and restoration of 'traditional culture' by the Seongnam Cultural Center, rewriting of Seongnam history and protection of environment by many citizens' organizations, etc. Seongnam's present will be probably characterized by the dynamics of the effort of cunstructing 'New Seongnam City' by the local government and many citizens' organizations.
